What do we mean by `women of colour' (WOC)? WOC is a term borrowed from the North American Third World feminist movement, and in the Australian context, refers to women who are usually categorised as coming from a `multicultural' or `culturally and linguistically diverse' (CALD) or `Non-English-speaking' (NESB) background. That is, women who do not identify with and/or are not categorised as Anglo-European/white.
Because Australia has a history of masculine colonialism and white feminism, groups that address `racism issues' are often dominated by men while groups that focus on `women's issues' are often white-centred, focusing primarily on white women's experiences without taking into account how race and class affect one's understanding of what it means to be a woman. Thus, women of colour often feel torn, sometimes having to choose between being involved in `race issues' or `gender issues'. This collective aims to create a supportive and safe space for women of colour to come together and discuss pertinent issues, share our experiences, make new friends, and concoct plans for brownfemmogrrl revolution. This collective is autonomous and for women of colour only.
